Sunday, June 24 - 26, 2010, Grant County Fairgrounds, John Day OR

The Moto Guzzi marque has one of the most complete and organized owners club networks in the US. Known as MGNOC - Moto Guzzi National Owners Club, it was the Oregon chapter's turn this year to host the National Rally. Over 350 registrants enjoyed fabulous weather and riding to, from and around the city of John Day in Oregon's Grant County.

John Day also hosts a BMW Owners Rally every year and the town is used to and friendly towards bikers who come here to get away from the big city to ride through spectacular scenery on epic roads. There is every variety of road surface and technical level in the area - the switchback twisties of OR 245, the potholes and tarsnakes of Forest Road 16 from Seneca to Unity and the high speed sweepers of Hwy 26 east of Prairie City and 395 immediately south of John Day and north of neighboring Mt. Vernon.

The rally featured demo rides organized by Moto Guzzi North America and Beaverton OR based Moto Guzzi and Triumph dealer Cascade Moto Classics, field games, Show and Shine and the usual banter of dyed-in-the-wool motorcycle enthusiasts.

Photos are from the author's route from Portland to the rally site and back and include a side trip through the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness to the south of John Day. The route was Portland to Biggs on WA SR14, Biggs to Condon on 97 and 206, Condon to Heppner on 206, Heppner to Ukiah on Willow Creek Highway, Ukiah to Mt. Vernon on 395, Mt. Prineville to Redmond and Sisters on 126, Sisters to Detroit on 22 and FR46 and 224 to Estacada and Portland.

Notable diners in the area are: Willow Creek Diner - Heppner, The Outpost - John Day, Eldorado Ditch - Unity.
